Frequently Asked Questions

Makeups, Starting Late, Cancellation:
What happens if I miss a class? You can make up 2 missed classes per semester. Current registered parents may go to our Makeup Class Instructions for full details.. Make-up classes cannot be carried on to another semester and are not transferrable to another family.

What if my child has a runny nose or had a fever?
If your child isn't feeling well and you think he/she may be contagious, please keep them home. A runny nose with mucus that is not clear, or a fever within 24 hours before class is a sign that your child is contagious. Please respect the health of the other families in your class by not exposing them. You can utilize two makeups (instructions above).

If I start late, can you pro-rate the session? If you are starting our session after it has begun, we can pro-rate your session. The maximum pro-ration will be for two weeks. The pro-rate amount is based on $15 per class missed. The pro-ration is not combinable with other discounts such as Pregnancy Plan.

What happens if I need to cancel the semester? You can cancel your registration for any reason until the FIRST WEEK OF CLASS. You will be charged a $30 cancellation fee and refunded the rest of your tuition. If you have taken materials already, an additional $35 will be withheld.

We regret that there can be no refunds after the first week of class. Your spot in class has been sold and cannot necessarily be resold. Many classes are full and people have been turned away when the spot is booked.

Can I pay by credit card? Yes, you can pay online with a credit card. You can also pay by check. Please take care of payment directly with the office, not by bringing a check to class. Class teachers cannot take care of your registration needs.

What is your mailing address?  Musc Together of SF, PO Box 371075 Montara, CA 94037

You can pay for half a session plus materials and registration, then choose whichever 5 classes work for your delivery timing. Total is $125 for returning families, $130 for new families. Subject to availability in classes. Contact the Director to elect this plan. paul@musictogethersf.com This plan cannot be combined with any pro-rating.

About the Lessons:
How long are the lessons?
The classes are 45 minutes each.

How many classes in a session? There are 12 classes in the Fall session. There are 10 in each of the Winter and Spring sessions. Summer session lasts 7 weeks.

How many children are in each class? There is normally a maximum of 12 children enrolled in each class. Occasionally there may be one or two extra families doing a preview or making up a missed class. Each child or set of siblings is accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

What is the age range of the classes? All classes are mixed from 0 through 5 years, unless otherwise stated. The activities are Parent/Child interactive so mixed ages are not an issue. We find mixed age classes to be extremely beneficial for early musical development in a variety of ways.

There are two Babies classes for infants under eight months in Spring 2007, held at Noe Valley on Mondays at 1:00pm and on Saturdays at 12:00pm. You may prefer to enroll your baby in the mixed age classes instead.

There are two Big Kids classes for children ages 4 to 6 years old in Spring 2007: at Twin Peaks/Miraloma Park on Thursdays at 11:45am and at 3:00pm in Noe Valley.  If you have a four to six-year-old who has attended several semesters of Music Together®, he or she may be ready for one of these classes. Bring your child for the same outstanding music with some different kinds of activities-rhythm improvisation, introduction to notation concepts, independent singing, dance improvisation, and dramatic play. Teachers work with individual skill levels and interests.

Click on Types of Classes for more info.

What do you do in the classes? It's 45 minutes of fun, informal music making and creating. Adults and children together sing and dance to songs, play instruments, look at pictures in our songbooks, make up silly rhymes for our songs, sing tonal and rhythmic patterns and experience a wide range of rhythmic and melodic musical variety. You will also join your teacher singing as she plays her keyboard, recorder, guitar, or flute (depending on your teacher). Live music making rather than passive listening is the name of our game!

How can I preview a class with my child? You can come to a class during a regular session or, at the beginning of each session, we hold Demo Classes.

Click for the Current Demo Class Schedule for more info. If you've missed this semester's demos and there is room in a class, you can sometimes visit the class in session as a demo. If you join, you will pay from that class forward, if not, you may take it as a free class.

What kind of instruments do you use? We have a wide variety of unpitched instruments such as Drums, Triangles, Tamborines, Bells, Shakers and Rhythm sticks. The reason for unpitched instruments is so that the children will never feel they are playing a "wrong" note and can join in however they like. You too will be playing along on these instruments! We also use chime bars pitched to match the songs and we dance with scarves and other props! The teachers play keyboard, guitar, flute, recorder, banjo, accordion, sruti, autoharp, etc to accompany the songs as well as using some recorded selections.

My child probably won't sit still for 45 minutes........Music Together classes maintain an informal atmosphere in the classroom and we do not expect children of this young age to sit still throughout the whole class. Normally we have about 3 or 4 activities during the class where we all get up and move around the room. Also children are free to wander about the circle or around the room during the class as long as they are obviously still mentally engaged in the activities. Parents are free to take the activity over to their child to engage them or try to bring them back to the circle.

Can I bring my husband/grandma/aunt etc? Yes. Any number of adults can attend with a registered child but they should be prepared to participate actively in the class (not just stand watching as it disturbs the tone of the class).

Do you do the same songs every week? No, each week we do about 10-12 songs from the 25-30 song collection. So each week we do mostly familiar songs with a few new ones till we have covered the whole session's collection.

Do you have the same songs each session? No, There are 9 nine different sessions of material so families can take the course for 3 years and not repeat the material.
